Heat pumps in Stockton

A heat pump is an air conditioner that can also run in reverse to heat the house. Stockton winters are mild enough for one to handle the whole year, and when an old AC and an old gas furnace come due together, one heat pump can replace both.

Why the valley suits a heat pump

Over 2016-2025, January nights at Stockton Metropolitan Airport averaged about 40.4°F and December nights about 39.8°F. That is a long way from the cold that makes heat pumps struggle. Tule fog can keep winter afternoons gray and chilly, but the average night stays well above freezing. Summers are the hard part, and a heat pump cools exactly like a central air conditioner.

Most homes here still heat with gas. Across the 27 ZIP codes we cover, 62% of occupied homes use utility gas and 29% use electricity (Census ACS 2020-2024). In an all-electric home, a heat pump is usually the obvious replacement. In a gas home it is a choice, and it is worth pricing.

What it costs

Fixr puts a heat pump installation at $5,000 to $15,000, with a $8,350 average, against $5,800 to $14,400 for a central air conditioner alone. When the furnace is also near the end, compare a heat pump against an AC plus a new furnace, not against the AC alone. Lodi Electric Utility lists a rebate for air source heat pumps; check its application for the current amount and rules.

What to ask

  • Is the system sized from a load calculation for this house?
  • Does the price include the permit and the independent field test California requires?
  • Will the existing ducts work, or do they need sealing or resizing?
  • Does the electrical panel have room for it, or is an upgrade part of the price?
  • Do you keep the gas furnace as backup (a dual-fuel setup) or remove it?

Heat pump repair

A heat pump has the same parts as an air conditioner plus a reversing valve and defrost controls. If it cools but won't heat, or heats but won't cool, the reversing valve or its control is a common suspect. Ice that builds on the outdoor unit in winter and never clears points to the defrost system. Both are jobs for a technician. Common repairs.

Questions Stockton homeowners ask

Do heat pumps work in Stockton winters?

Yes. January nights at the airport average around 40 degrees, well within what a modern heat pump handles.

How much does a heat pump cost?

Fixr lists heat pump installation at $5,000 to $15,000, with an $8,350 average. Ductwork and electrical upgrades can add to that.

Should I replace my gas furnace with a heat pump?

If the furnace and the air conditioner are both old, get a price for a heat pump alongside a price for a new AC and furnace. One heat pump replaces both.
