Duct repair and sealing in Stockton
If some rooms never cool down while others are fine, the ducts are often the problem, not the air conditioner. In a Stockton attic on a July afternoon, every leak dumps cooled air into a space far hotter than outside.
Signs the ducts are the problem
- One or two rooms stay several degrees warmer than the rest.
- Weak airflow from some vents, strong from others.
- Dust that comes back fast, or a dusty smell when the system starts.
- Flex duct in the attic that is crushed or has come apart at a joint.
- A high bill for a system that runs fine.
CHEERS, a California provider of the raters who test HVAC installs, says the average California home system leaks 30% of its conditioned air into places other than the living space. That is one reason the state requires a duct test when a system is replaced.
Older houses, older ducts
About 44% of homes in the ZIP codes we cover were built before 1980 (Census ACS 2020-2024). In central Stockton the share is higher still. Ducts that old were often installed for a smaller system, or were patched when the system was replaced. In those houses the ducts can matter as much as the new equipment.
Sealing or cleaning
Sealing closes the leaks at joints and boots with mastic or approved tape. Repair replaces crushed or torn sections. Cleaning removes dust and debris, and Fixr puts it at $300 to $700, with a $500 average. Cleaning doesn't fix leaks. If the rooms are uneven, ask for a leakage test before paying for cleaning.
Lodi Electric Utility lists a rebate for duct sealing with testing. Check its application for the current terms.

Questions Stockton homeowners ask
Why is one room in my house always hotter?
Common causes are a leaky or crushed duct to that room, a duct that was undersized from the start, or a room with more sun and less insulation. A technician can measure airflow at the vent.
How much does duct cleaning cost?
Fixr lists air duct cleaning at $300 to $700, with a $500 average. Cleaning doesn't seal leaks.
